I was meant to set you a homework but forgot :( This was to keep you busy over the holidays and get us ahead a little. If you see this message then the homework is to:
- Research and produce notes on the following reactions of carbonyls - the mechanism for nucleophilic addition reactions of aldehydes and ketones with NaBH4 and HCN to form alcohols and hydroxynitriles respectively
- For NaBH4, the nucleophile can be considered as being the hydride ion, H–, with subsequent protonation of the organic intermediate from H2O.
- v For HCN, initial nucleophilic attack is from CN– ions; subsequent protonation stage can be shown using H2O or H+.
- 2 Then to complete a pack of questions on carbonyls. These you can collect from my classroom and are in the deep tray labelled 13CCh.
When I remember how to put files on here I’ll post a copy
up.
It is due first lesson in w/c 7th November.
