Year 13 - Missing homework

Dear all,

I was meant to set you a homework but forgot :( This was to keep you busy over the holidays and get us ahead a little. If you see this message then the homework is to:

1.  Research and produce notes on the following reactions of carbonyls - the mechanism for nucleophilic addition reactions of aldehydes and ketones with NaBH₄ and HCN to form alcohols and hydroxynitriles respectively               

•   For NaBH₄, the nucleophile can be considered as being the hydride ion, H^–, with subsequent protonation of the organic intermediate from H₂O.
• v For HCN, initial nucleophilic attack is from CN^– ions; subsequent protonation stage can be shown using H₂O or H⁺.

1. 2      Then to complete a pack of questions on carbonyls. These you can collect from my classroom and are in the deep tray labelled 13CCh.

When I remember how to put files on here I’ll post a copy up. 

It is due first lesson in w/c 7th November.

Holiday Homework

Please bring a completed version of your method and a print out of your graph on Tuesday 1st November - you will also have a test on rates period 3.

You will need to write a detailed method for the practical that you carried out in the lesson:

Records

As evidence for the Practical Endorsement, you should have recorded evidence of all your measurements and any relevant observations in a suitable format. You should also include a record of the equipment that you used, and any adaptations you made to your method while you completed the activity. You should save your spreadsheet with processed data, which will provide a record of the volumes of solutions you used for each experiment. If you keep hardcopy records, you may want to include a printout of your spreadsheet data there too. All work should be clearly dated.

You will also have a test on Tuesday 1st November - the test will be on everything that we have done on rates.

Dear all,

Revision seminar - Redox

You are all invited to a revision seminar on Redox next Wednesday (18th may).  It will run from 4 until 5.30 pm in J37.

We will remind you during the week.  It should be really useful.  :-)

Dates for next two weeks

I just wanted to confirm the mocks and coursework sessions running over the next two weeks - I think I may have got muddled up on Friday, sorry.

Next week:
F324 retake, open to all, after school on Thursday (5th May)
Final quantitative task, open to all, after school on Friday (6th May)

Week after next:
13e F325 mock, Thursday P5 - this will run over I'm afraid.  You are welcome to come at the beginning of lunch to get started early. (12th May)
13b F325 mock, Friday P1&2 (13th May)

Bonus opportunity: Spectroscopy in a suitcase, two sessions (P1&2 and P3&4), open to all.  It involves some visitors from Oxford Uni with £10,000s of spectroscopy equipment.  They will present you with an unknown chemical and some data, you will collect some data and then work out what it is.  Great revision for F324.
